Gaming is a big part of Alexis Jones’ life in a few different ways. After playing college basketball for Duke University and Baylor University, she was drafted to the WNBA in 2017 and currently plays for the Atlanta Dream. The team still practices together daily with COVID-19 precautions in place. “We get our temperatures checked every day, take a COVID-19 test every three days and wear masks while we play,” Jones tells me over a Zoom call. (She and the team are currently in Spain.) But basketball is not the only game in Jones’ life.
In November, Jones joined the Queens Gaming Collective, a new gaming lifestyle brand to promote and support female players. (The streamers and content creators are aptly named queens.) “I’ve always been into competitive gaming – when I’m not playing basketball, that’s what I love to do – and I’m really starting to get into it under quarantine,” Jones says. In a year where the physical connection has been poor, games have provided a way for people to interact while still staying safe at home. “For me, Queens is important because it connects you with a group of women who will understand you, believe in you and support you,” Jones says. “These are women who are actually listening to your journey and want to support you on it.”
As much as Jones loves to play, her schedule revolves around basketball training. A typical day for her is a training with the team, break and then team basketball training. “During recess, I still practice on my own and have also started lifting,” she says. “Lifting is important to keep the muscles strong – and it doesn’t have to be a heavy weight,” she says. Jones adds that rest is also really important; if she trained hard the day before, she will take it easy the next day so her body can recover.
In terms of eating, Jones says that for her, nothing is really illegal. “I try to eat healthy, but I also love fried chicken,” she says. “The only food I really minimize is red meat, though I do want a good steak a few times a year.” So what does she eat? Here, Jones shares what an average eating day looks like for her. While her food diary is not intended to be a guide – after all, as a professional athlete, her dietary needs are different from those of the average person – it offers a fun, voyeuristic insight into what keeps her excited on and off the track.

“My trainer told me to start drinking a large glass of water every morning, so I start doing it every day, followed by 60 crunches,” says Jones, adding that she makes sure to finish a whole water bottle. , before she goes to training. . “I’m not a big breakfast person, though, so normally I want to go to team training and just eat after.”
Even though she skips breakfast, Jones says she compensates for it when lunch time rolls around. “One of my go-to lunches is chicken tacos,” she says. But when she gets taco tired, she shifts it up and eats sushi. “I like to eat a big lunch, but I just try to stay away from fried food as I have to go back to basketball practice after lunch,” she says.
Jones says on training days that she tends to be so busy that she does not have time for an afternoon snack, but if she relaxes at home when she plays, she will want something she can eat while she plays. Her go-to: popcorn. “I definitely have more of a salty tooth than a sweet one,” she says.
For dinner, Jones loves a classic pre-game favorite: spaghetti. “I don’t cook much food, but I have a handful of meals that I like that I can well make, like spaghetti, chicken or salmon,” she says. Since Jones is not big on sweets, she says she does not usually have dessert. Instead, she spends the evening relaxing and then goes to bed. The training time comes early.
